The sun’s out, and Oxford’s principal rowing regatta, Summer Eights, is upon us. From the 25th to the 28th May (Oxford Vth Week), the Isis will play host to a great celebration of sport and summer.
We hope you will come and join us!
Looking smart in the eight they christened last year, the ‘Oliver Starkey’, Somerville’s W1 starts this year in a strong if arduous position, as sandwich boat at the bottom of the First Division. M1 meanwhile starts at 7 in the Third Division, with the ability to make serious progress towards promotion next year.
At rowing on today, both W2 and M2 qualified with good times (M2 just over the three minute mark, and W2 a little over three and a half).
There is always a great atmosphere down at the riverside (and especially at University College boat house on the county bank, where SCBC is based) during the regatta. Saturday in particular is a spectular day as the whole of Oxford decamps to the banks of the Isis.
The SCBC team will be running a barbeque during the afternoon, followed by the 1921 Association alumni drinks at 4pm. The regatta will be topped off by the highlight of the boat club social calendar, the Eights Dinner, a chance for current members, friends, and alumni to come together celebrate a great year of rowing. This year also marks thirty years since W1 won the Headship in 1986, giving a special character to this year’s festivities.
